Mental health evaluation ordered for alleged bank robber

Foster's Daily Democrat - 7/14/2018

July 13--DOVER -- The suspect who police say robbed a Bank of New Hampshire branch Thursday afternoon will be released on recognizance bail pending a mental health evaluation.

Strafford County Attorney Tom Velardi said that James Aubin, 45, of Jay Way in Rochester, had no criminal history before approximately 2:15 p.m. Wednesday when Dover Police detectives say he walked into the bank and demanded cash.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Dover Police Lt. Brant Dolleman for Aubin's arrest, a teller at the bank told investigators that a man came into the bank and said "give me the money" and "nobody will get hurt." The teller gave the man money, who then fled in a silver sedan. Detectives released surveillance images of the suspect to the media to get the public's help in identifying the suspect.

Shortly eafter the images were released, Dolleman said police received a tip from another local bank that suggested the suspect was Aubin. "They said that Aubin generally comes to the bank every Thursday for a cash advance," but he didn't show up on Thursday, Dolleman wrote. Detectives located a photo of Aubin on Facebook, and it appeared to match suspect at the Bank of New Hampshire branch situated in Shaw's Plaza on Central Avenue, the affidavit states.

Detectives went to Aubin's home, where according to the affidavit, Aubin waived his Miranda rights and provided a recorded confession where he admitted to robbing the bank. "Aubin said he spent some of the money at a local restaurant and then gave the remaining cash to the detectives, which was in the trunk of silver Toyota Sedan," Dolleman. "Aubin also gave the detectives the clothes and shoes that he was seen wearing in the bank security footage."

A bail commissioner Thursday set Aubin's bail at $10,000 cash, which he was unable to post. Velardi said Strafford County Community Corrections is willing to supervise Aubin pending the mental health evaluation and confirming of stable housing. Upon acceptance to Community Corrections, Aubin's bail will revert to $10,000 personal recognizance. The bail would revert to cash if he violated any terms of bail, Velardi.
